The flag hosting ceremony done by the President of India, followed by the mesmerizing parade showcasing our military strength and our cultural diversity leaves the entire nation awestruck. The acrobat performed by the military personnel on bikes and the airforce jets smudging the sky with the tricolour infuses patriotism in every Indian. So on the occasion of India's 70th Republic Day, we bring you 12 Facts About Republic Day That Every Indian Must Know



1.The first Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950, three years after we got independence.




2. Republic Day Celebrations are a 3-day long affair.



3. A Christian song, Abide With Me, is played at the Republic Day Parade. It is believed to be one of Mahatma Gandhi's favorite song.



4. India's Constitution is the longest in the world. It has a total of 448 articles.



5. Dr B.R. Ambedkar took 2 years and 11 months to draft the Indian Constitution.



6. Two copies of the Indian Constitution were hand-written, one in English and one in Hindi and were signed on 24th of January in 1950 by around 308 members of the Assembly.



7. Indian Constitution is only calligraphed and not printed and only 1000 copies are written till date.



8. Jana Gana Mana (National Anthem) was written first in Bengali language by the Rabindranath Tagore and was first translated into Hindi language by the Abid Ali in 1911 which was later officially adopted as National Anthem of India in 1950 on 24th of January.The lyrics and music of Indian national anthem was given by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911.



9. The Preamble of Indian Constitution has been inspired by the preamble of USA which also states “We the people…”.



10. On 26th of January in 1965 Hindi language was declared as our national language of India.



11. On 26th January, 1950, the Lion of Ashoka at Sarnath was chosen as the National Emblem of India.



12. It was raining on the day the constitution was being signed which most people considered as a good luck for the country.
